AIMS: to provide midwives with practical and theoretical tools to understand better the functions and the physiological dynamics of labour pain, to help women's motivation, to offer specific emotional and physical support, to acquire instruments for reducing pain to his physiological minimum and to enable/ encourage physiological analgesia, so that the birth experience can remain whole. The midwife needs to have the ability to offer women information and tools to cope with labour pain, and to help them understand the meaning of the whole process. In this way she is able to increase the women's sense of coherence and capacity of coping not only with labour, but with the child.

Methodology: Theory, practical experiences and body work are alternated during teaching, in order to promote a deeper knowledge of the subject and experiment it on the three levels of the central dimensions. The participation should be active and unbiased. Wear comfortable clothes and bring socks with you. The course is not open to more than 20 participants

Evaluation: evaluation will be continuos, oral and through group work. At the end of the workshop there will be a questionnaire of general evaluation of the learning.

Verena Schmid is an independent midwife from Florence, Italy, who founded the "associazione per il parto a domicilio IL MARSUPIO", an independent midwifery center in 1985, as well as founding and directing the “Elemental School of Midwifery Art" in 1996, a unique school of physiology for midwives. She is also the founder and director of the professional magazine for midwives “Donna e Donna il giornale delle ostetriche”in 1993, co-author of several books (9) and author of four own books. She has been a lecturer in several meetings and congresses in Italy and in Europe (72). In the year 2000 she received the international award Astrid Limburg for her commitment to promote midwifery and natural birth in Italy.
